Draft Preparation

NFL Draft Eligibility

The draft is the first chance teams get to conduct contract negotiations with players who have been out of high school for three years.

Most drafted players come directly out of NCAA programs as seniors or juniors, all players entering the draft must at least be in their junior year, while some players are selected from other professional leagues. All players who choose to enter the selected year's draft must sign an agent prior to entering the draft. A player who is drafted but does not sign a contract can sit out that season, which is referred to as a "holdout", and can re-enter the draft the following year unless they were told differently by the NFL commissioner.

Added Enrollment

Printed on May 2003, on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers web site:

Sam Olajubutu, an undersized but extremely productive linebacker at Arkansas, was asked at the NFL Scouting Combine where he thought he would go in April’s draft. Olajubutu, an upbeat sort who is used to being dismissed due to his height (he measured in at 5-8 at the combine), shrugged, gave his best guess and moved on.

“I don’t know,” he mused. “Probably second day some time.”

The NFL wrapped up its 2007 draft early Sunday evening, and as it turned out Olajubutu was not among the 255 players selected. Scramble the picks and hold the seven rounds all over again, and he might hear his name called this time. Drafting is an inexact science, to put it mildly, and it gets less exact each round. Every year, there are dozens of undrafted free agents who make it onto NFL rosters and many more sixth and seventh-round draft picks who don’t.

NFL Draft Free Agents - Undrafted Talent
 by Nick Meyer

Across the board in the NFL, teams have recognized just how important the NFL Draft is and why investing in good scouting is the best move a franchise can make.

But tons of gems still slide down the draft board and are not taken due to different factors such as not being the right fit for certain teams or not having the potential of lesser-known guys from smaller schools.

There are plenty big names on the undrafted free agent list in the wake of the 2009 NFL Draft and many of them could be solid role players on the right team.

Who Do You Know?

Who do you know? If you do a "family tree" of most NFL players, you'll generally see a direct link to a relative or coach who also played in the NFL.

We see hundreds of top level talent not make NFL teams because when it comes down to selection time, it's the relationship to a brother, father or coach that is or has been affiliated with an NFL team.

There are less politics at the UFL and Arena league level, however, less positions and less pay as well.

Our advice is, in addition to staying out of trouble, working out and making game film, we highly recommend building a personal relationship with someone in the NFL.  If you have talent, you will at least get a look.

Road to Success: Darnell Dinkins

Check out Darnell Dinkins. He fell through the cracks at Pitt due to an injury. He got hooked up with a minor league football team after college and quickly made it through the ranks as an undrafted free agent.

He made it to the NFL and now plays for the New Orleans Saints.

Google search "Darnell Dinkins" to see his road to the Pros.

How to seperate yourself from the others

There are less than 2000 rosters spots in the NFL. There are 100,000 people vying for those positions. How can you set yourself apart from the rest? The answers are black and white.
